SYNOPSIS
Iti Aweng ni Imelda [Imelda’s Melodies] takes viewers on a poignant journey through the life of Imelda Gajano Espejo, a 73-year-old harpist residing in Lasam, Cagayan. As one of the oldest and few remaining harpists in Northern Luzon, Imelda’s talent and dedication have earned her recognition from the provincial government. Yet, despite the occasional glimmer of the spotlight cast upon her by agencies and officials, she continues to grapple with financial struggles in her daily life.
Beneath the surface of her musical gift lie the scars of a troubled past. Imelda’s journey is marked by the trauma and deep wounds inflicted by closest family members. Yet, amidst the adversity, her spirit remains unbroken. Imelda’s dream of becoming a renowned musician in Cagayan continues to burn brightly within her, serving as a guiding light as she navigates the complexities of life.
Imelda’s aspirations to become a renowned artist are fueled by the strong relationships and deep rapport she has cultivated within her community. The unwavering support and encouragement she receives from her community serve as the bedrock upon which she builds her dreams. These connections not only provide her with emotional sustenance but also offer practical assistance- food, asisstance and even the warmth that fills the gap in heart heart.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
“Everybody needs a haven- to heal, to mend, to escape.”
Music was both Imelda’s haven and her nightmare. It evoked cherished memories of her parents and her love for music, yet also triggered past traumas. No rhythm or melody could erase the emotions and memories tied to the songs she played.
My documentary film, “Iti Aweng ni Imelda” (Imelda’s Melodies), explores our connection to art — both as creators and consumers. It delves into the memories and self-realization that drive artistic expression. The film encourages viewers to reflect on their relationships with elders and consider how they can better support their passions and dreams.
This film represents a deeply personal endeavor for me. It’s a journey of introspection and reconciliation, where I confront the unspoken rifts and unresolved tensions that have subtly fractured my family over time. Through this cinematic exploration, I aim to not only acknowledge these gaps but also to actively work towards healing and reconnection.
PRODUCER'S STATEMENT
“Music heals but sometimes it may also trigger our traumas. However, music is part of anyone’s memories.”
“Everyone is an artist until the rent is due” can be a disheartening reminder of the financial realities that often stifle artistic pursuits. It implies that the pursuit of art is a luxury, sustainable only until the necessities of life demand a more stable income. This can be particularly discouraging for older individuals, who may face age discrimination in the traditional job market and feel that their artistic dreams are out of reach.
Imelda’s story represents the struggles and triumphs of countless artists who have persevered despite societal expectations and financial pressures. The documentary highlights the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of art. It is a testament to the belief that artistic expression is not a luxury, but a fundamental human need.
The world of art is often perceived as a realm of glamour and brilliance, but beneath the surface lies a reality that is often overlooked: a narrative of struggle, hardship, and despair. The film “Imelda’s Melodies” aims to unravel this hidden narrative, not by elevating artists to an unattainable pedestal, but by grounding them in a shared human experience. The film recognizes that art and artists are not separate from society; they are an integral part of it, consumed and needed by all.
Jerome Dulin, the director of this documentary, brings a unique perspective to the project. His longstanding fascination with the stories of indigenous people and the elderly, combined with his background in Found Story, allows him to delve into the heart of each character’s story, revealing their raw and authentic experiences.
